Book Review: One Of The Guys – Lisa Aldin

One of the GuysOne of the Guys by Lisa Aldin
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

***I was provided with an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review***

Let me first say that when I first read the description, I was excited for this but a little worried because of the whole “monster hunting” plot, as I’m sure that would scare some people away. Also, after reading the first chapter I hated the characters names and I still hated the idea of the “monster hunting”.

After the next few chapters I found myself loving these characters and their story. The monster hunting was probably my favorite parts of the book which ended up surprising me! Their names also helped me envision the characters better so I ended up loving the names.

The Winston girls and their stories were really great too! I would get excited when we were introduced to someone new and getting to know more of their story.

Overall, this book was really adorable and I highly recommend it. The writing is great and the dialog is funny and real. Please do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of this book, I’m sure you’ll love it as much as I did!

My True Love Gave To Me – Various Authors

My True Love Gave to Me: Twelve Holiday StoriesMy True Love Gave to Me: Twelve Holiday Stories by Stephanie Perkins
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Here is a short review for each story:

1) Midnights – Rainbow Rowell

★★★★★ 5 Stars.
It was really cute and I instantly started shipping them from the first few pages! Many short stories make you want more in the end but not this one. It begins and ends so perfectly!

The Lady & The Fox – Kelly Link

★★☆☆☆☆ 2 Stars.
I was enjoying the mystery until I didn’t anymore. And in the end, I still didn’t get it. It wasn’t necessarily boring, it just wasn’t good and I was left very confused.

Angels in the Snow – Matt de la Pena

★★★★☆ 4 Stars.
This was really great. I really liked the characters and how different they were from each other. The only complaint I have is, as much as I respect and understand the ending, I wish there was more. This is the first time I’ve read anything by this author and it won’t be the last.

Polaris Is Where You’ll Find Me – Jenny Han

★★★½☆ 3.5 Stars
Nooooo! Why did it have to end there? Jenny Han, there has to be a part two somewhere in that brain of yours and I want to read it! This was very nice and felt the most like Christmas to me because of Santa Clause, the Elves & the North Pole. Also, Jenny is one of my favorite authors! This could’ve been a book all on its own! But why did it have to end there? I get it, but…no. 😦

It’s A Yuletide Miracle, Charlie Brown – Stephanie Perkins

★★★★★ 5 Stars.
Stephanie Perkins is another one of my all time favorite authors and I will read anything she writes. This story is a great example why. She writes characters that you instantly fall in love with and situations that are absolutely no where near boring. I really loved this and was sad when I it was over.

Your Temporary Santa – David Levithan

★★★½☆ 3.5 Stars.
Oh man! Do not get me wrong, I did really enjoy this one, but in the end it didn’t answer anything. I don’t know… I liked the characters and what I think the story was, but in the end I wished it was executed more properly.

Krampuslauf – Holly Black

★★★☆☆ 3 Stars.
The story was fun and funny and I was rooting for all the characters in the end. But once again, I didn’t get the whole thing as a whole. Is it because I don’t know what a Krampuslauf is? Is it real? Lol

What The Hell Have You Done, Sophie Roth? – Gayle Forman

★★★★★ 5 Stars.
This story made me smile. Lol. It really did. I’m a sucker for well written dialogue and lovable characters and this story definitely had both. 🙂

Beer Buckets And Baby Jesus – Myra McEntire

★★★★★ 5 Stars.
This was adorable! I don’t understand why some people skimmed over this story. I really don’t! One of my favorites!

Welcome To Christmas, CA – Kiersten White

★★★★★ 5 Stars.
Oh no! I really thought that Midnights by Rainbow Rowell would end up being my favorite story out of this entire collection because I was reaching the end…but then there was this magical story! Seriously, this was really great! I felt like I read an actual novel instead of a short story! So full of detail and character development. I loved it so much! Where have you been hiding, Kiersten White? 😉

Star Of Bethlehem – Ally Carter

★★★★☆ 4 Stars.
Gosh, I was in love with this story from the very beginning! A story about a girl running away from her life and has no idea where her plane is about to land. When she gets there, it isn’t exactly the escape plan she was hoping for and is surprised by what is waiting for her there.

It’s heartwarming, funny & really made me smile. I loved the mystery, I loved the setting & I loved all the characters!

The Girl Who Woke The Dreamer – Laini Taylor

★☆☆☆☆ 1 Star.
The most disappointing way to end this book, in my opinion. I did not love this story. Maybe because it was SO different than the other eleven stories? Maybe because I didn’t care not even a bit for any of the characters? Or maybe because in a book about holiday stories, this one just didn’t have a holiday feel to it (which, sure, it was about Christmas, but only spoke of it once or twice). I honestly will probably re read this story again at another time but as for now, I’m sorry to say it’s a 1 star rating from me for now.

This was my first Laini Taylor story I’ve ever read but that doesn’t discourage me from reading her other books because I hear she is an amazing & genius writer and that makes me excited to read more from her, despite this story.

Well, there it is. Over all I’m rating this book 4.5 stars (5 Stars for the sake of Goodreads) because despite only two bad stories (again, only my opinion!) the book was crafted with 10 other great stories! Even the 3-star-incomplete-feeling stories were still great and very fun to read! I’ve fallen in love with all these authors storytelling and can’t wait to read more by them! Yes, Kelly Link’s story did not make me happy, but she is the only author I promised myself I wouldn’t read anything else from and that just isn’t fair. I loved every other author, and I’m giving Liani Taylor a real shot after that story, so I have to give Kelly Link’s work another shot and read something else by her because she had to be featured along side these other amazing writers for a reason, right?

Again, I loved this book and I really hope another volume comes out later this year! 🙂

Isla and the Happily Ever After-Stephanie Perkins

Isla and the Happily Ever After (Anna and the French Kiss, #3)Isla and the Happily Ever After by Stephanie Perkins
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The PERFECT end to one of the BEST series ever! I couldn’t stop smiling and laughing and (almost) crying! The scenes with all the characters were great and the setting was beautiful.

Stephanie Perkins’ writing is phenomenal and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. She has a new book coming out that she describes as a teen slasher novel, and I seriously can’t wait to read it! – Stephanie Perkins Thank you for all of these wonderful characters!

P.S. Please do not listen to others when they tell you it’s absolutely not important to read the books in order…they’re lying!

Chubby Bunny

Have you ever played? Well, it’s a game where every player takes a turn putting a marshmallow in their mouths until they no longer can say “Chubby Bunny”. The last player to clearly say Chubby Bunny wins. I feel like I’ve been playing and winning this real life version of the game most of my life, but just recently I started to feel like I was losing.

I felt like speaking up and saying what was on my mind when someone upset me by their actions or words but instead, I found myself placing another marshmallow and trying to say Chubby Bunny. Except this time, I couldn’t. I realized I could no longer just sit there stuffing my face with situations I didn’t agree with and instead had to stand up and speak my mind.

I am not one to hurt someone’s feelings intentionally, so I wouldn’t do that. Also, if I don’t care about you than I don’t care to waste my time on you & wouldn’t want to try and fix something that I could care less about. So if somehow, without sounding like a 5 year old, you are hurting my feelings, than I’m going to tell you. I’m not going to sit there and just not speak up anymore because if we are real friends, than you should be able to understand that it’s coming from a loving place and whatever the problem is we can resolve it and still stay friends.

So screw you, Chubby Bunny I’m glad we’re done playing because frankly, I wasn’t having much fun.

How much can someone change, really?

Have you ever been in a relationship where they’ve told you countless times that they’ll change? Here’s something you might already know deep down inside…THEY WON’T. They see how sad you are, and maybe in that one moment they actually feel bad, but once they’ve kissed your ass, they’ll be doing the same thing or the next new thing that’ll have you frustrated & in tears again.

Relationships are not easy, I get that. But they’re also not suppose to be so hard. Stop wasting your time with someone who doesn’t treat you the way you know you should be treated. There are SO many people in this world who are right for you, stop wasting your time with the one who isn’t. Don’t settle, you only have one life to live. Make the right decisions in life now, and smile for the remainder of the rest.

Xx Johnny Bobby.

6. Are you dating? Are you single? Do you have a crush? No. Yes. Yes. 😉

7. Ever had a terrible breakup? Nope.

8. Are you still friends with any of your exes? Yes! I don’t believe in wasting time! If you’re in a long term relationship and break up because you realize you both aren’t made to be in a relationship together, why not stay friends? You’ve spent all this time together and had a good “friendship” than why just throw it all away? Now, I’m not saying become best friends, which I believe is also possible, I’m just saying there’s no need to act like strangers. “Hi! How are you”, works perfectly fine. On the other hand, there should only be 2 reason as to why you should cut them off, IMO. 1. Your new boyfriend/girlfriend has a real problem with it, than just stop befriending the ex. 2. If they’ve ripped out your heart and treated it like a piece of tasteless gum, than they don’t deserve to even have you as a friend and you should maybe just go and forget about them and all those memories. Focus on creating new memories with someone else. <(HELLO! PREACHING MOMENT!) Lol

16. Favorite bands? Britney, Beyonce & JLO are my número uno. LOVE THEM and can listen to them 24/7 for the rest of my life! My favorite bands are NSYNC, 1D (SORRY, NOT SORRY) & Imagine Dragons! Lol but I listen to almost everything from Mariah, Michael Jackson, Bon Jovi, Prince, Lorde, Jason DeRulo, Miley, Madonna. Anything really. But I rather listen to an oldie over anything that's currently playing on the radio any day.

17. Favorite song? Goo Goo Dolls – Better Days

18. What is your song of the week? "Bastille" by Pompeii & Fancy by Iggy Azalea

21. Quality you look for in a partner? Genuine, funny, & and someone who gets me.

22. Where do you go when you’re sad? A good car ride always clears my mind. Sometimes my music is blaring, & sometimes I don't even put music on and just sit in silence. Depends on my mood.

23. How long does it take you to get ready in the morning? 10 minutes!

24. Ever been in a physical fight? Once in middle school! Lol

25. Turn on? A great smile!

26. Turn off? I'm weird with this, it depends on who it is! Lol. There will be something I find a turn off on someone but I'm okay with it on someone else. I guess if I had to pick, I'd have to say passing gas! LOL! Seriously, such a turn a off!

38. Your proudest moment? When I graduated from cosmetology school.

39. Happiest day of your life? That would have to be the day my first nephew was born. Before then, I’d never felt that kind of love for something or someone before. That is until my other niece & nephews were born. I love those kids as if they were my very own! I feel like the luckiest guy in the world when I’m with them!

40. Final thoughts? Well, that was fun! I can’t wait to start blogging. I have way to much on my mind everyday and this way I can get it out with words instead of talking to myself! Haha 🙊
